About

What exterior door installation includes

Exterior door installation covers the entry components that control fit, movement, security, and weather protection. We may work with the door slab, jambs, sill, threshold, hinges, latch, lockset, casing, and weatherstripping. The opening matters as much as the door. We review its width, height, depth, level, plumb, and condition before setting the new assembly. A replacement door must match the opening and the home's trim plan. Cost rises when the frame needs repair, the opening needs changes, or the finish includes custom trim and paint. Hardware, glass, material, swing direction, and disposal also affect the quote. Our preference is to spend first on correct fit and water control, then choose appearance details that suit the home. We provide a written scope, estimate, and project plan before work begins. That document helps separate needed opening work from optional finish choices.

What Exterior Door Installation Covers

Exterior door installation is a remodeling service that fits a door, frame, threshold, hardware, and weather seal into an outside opening.

  • Exterior door installation differs from door repair because it replaces or resets the entry assembly instead of adjusting one worn part.
  • The service scope includes measuring the opening, setting the frame, fitting the slab, and completing trim and seal work.

What to prepare before exterior door installation

A few details help us plan the entry and separate must-have work from finish choices.

  • Choose the preferred door material, glass style, swing, and finish.
  • Note where the door sticks, leaks, drafts, or fails to latch.
  • Clear furniture, rugs, and stored items from both sides of the entry.
  • Keep any existing hardware, trim, or paint details you want matched.
  • Share your preferred access plan and any household scheduling limits.
Process

How we install an exterior door

1

Review the existing entry

We inspect the slab, jambs, sill, threshold, hinges, latch, casing, and nearby finish to define the work.

2

Measure the opening

We record the opening size, jamb depth, swing, plumb, level, and clearance so the selected assembly fits the home.

3

Set the frame and threshold

We position the frame and threshold, then check alignment before attaching the door slab and hardware.

4

Fit the slab and hardware

We set the hinges, latch, lockset, and strike so the door swings freely and closes against the seal.

5

Complete trim and final checks

We finish casing and seal work, test the entry, document remaining items, and complete a final walkthrough.

Overall I enjoyed working with Linda and her team. Even though there were no major redesign of spaces and I knew exactly what tile/fixtures/cabinets etc I wanted I still was appreciative of her insight on certain details and choices. It was very easy to collaborate with her. She makes an effort to be in-tune with a client. She was very responsive and took care of everything that needed attention as soon as she was able too. She made sure that I was listened to and taken care of as a client with her subcontractors. I would work with her again.

Leaving a long overdue review. Linda helped us remodel our bathroom and kitchen last year. We also did some flooring improvements, and some electrical and plumbing work along the way. The pricing was very reasonable, and we appreciated that Linda was always conscious of our budget, when we made adjustments to our plan. The work was delivered very quickly on promised timelines. She had some really good suggestions around the choice of flooring, which we are thankful for (especially looking back after a year). Also appreciate her sense of style.. it helped us make the right choices for countertops, tiles and fixtures. It all looks great, our guests often comment on how beautiful our kitchen looks. Thank you!

Best remodel experience we have ever had. The oversight, careful workmanship and ownership of the project was above expectations. Our design team was amazing. We also had the same person do all the work start to finish and was a total Pro. Could not recommend enough and will be doing any and all projects through them. This place is a gem.

Questions about exterior door installation

Who installs exterior doors in Issaquah, Washington?

HomeRemodelIssaquah.link installs exterior doors for homeowners in Issaquah, Washington, nearby communities, and the surrounding King County area. We review the opening, door assembly, hardware, threshold, weatherstripping, and trim. Our written scope, estimate, and project plan identify the planned work before construction begins.

What makes an exterior door installation cost more?

Opening repairs, custom trim, hardware, glass, material choice, and finish work usually drive the quote. We separate the door assembly from jamb repair, threshold work, casing, paint, and disposal. That breakdown helps you compare needed work with optional finish choices. We provide an estimate after reviewing the entry and your selected door details.

Should I replace the whole door or only the weatherstripping?

Weatherstripping suits a sound door and frame, while replacement suits damaged, shifted, or poorly fitting assemblies. We check the seal, hinges, latch, jambs, threshold, and slab before choosing the work. A new seal won't correct a warped frame, and a full replacement may not be needed when the assembly remains sound.

What should I ask before hiring someone for this work?

Ask for the opening measurements, included parts, hardware details, trim plan, and written scope. We explain which work covers the slab, frame, threshold, seal, casing, and final checks. HomeRemodelIssaquah.link is a licensed and insured general contractor, and we maintain direct project communication throughout the work.

How do I prepare my home for a new exterior door?

Clear both sides of the entry and decide which hardware, trim, glass, and finish you want. We also need to know about sticking, drafts, leaks, or latch problems. Those details help us assess the opening and separate necessary fit work from appearance choices in the project plan.

Does a new exterior door prevent water damage?

A properly fitted threshold and sealed frame help limit water entry at the doorway. We inspect the lower jamb, sill, threshold, trim, and nearby floor before installation. Existing damage can require added repair work, so we identify that condition in the scope instead of treating the door slab as the whole solution.

Do you provide a written estimate for an exterior door project?

Yes, we provide a written estimate with the project scope and plan before work begins. The estimate can separate the door, frame, threshold, hardware, trim, finish, and related repairs. HomeRemodelIssaquah.link offers free estimates, and the final work follows the agreed project details.

Scenarios

When Customers Call Us About Exterior Door Installation

1

Drafts Around the Front Entry

A door that lets in light or outside air may have a worn seal, shifted frame, or damaged threshold. The right choice depends on whether the slab still fits the opening. We inspect the jambs, hinges, latch, and sill before recommending adjustment, component replacement, or a new assembly.

2

Water Damage Near the Threshold

Soft trim or floor damage near an exterior door needs more than a new slab. Water may have reached the sill, lower jamb, or nearby finish. We trace the affected area, define the needed opening work, and include threshold and seal details in the written scope.

3

A Door That No Longer Latches

A lock that misses its strike can make the entry hard to secure and may point to movement in the frame. We check the reveal, hinges, latch, and jamb before selecting hardware or replacement work. HomeRemodelIssaquah.link then explains the planned repair or installation in the estimate.
