Why do custom built-ins leave gaps around the wall?

Custom Built-Ins for City of Sammamish Homes

Custom built-ins solve a specific storage problem inside a specific room. We work with homeowners who need fitted shelving, cabinet storage, drawers, or a built-in work area that freestanding furniture can't match.

The job may include cabinet boxes, adjustable shelves, face frames, trim, paint, and hardware. The room's wall shape, floor level, outlet placement, and nearby doors help decide the scope.

This page focuses on material choice, especially how painted MDF compares with hardwood plywood, solid wood, wood veneer, and laminate shelving. The right choice depends on the finish, wear, moisture, and look you want.

  • Measure the wall opening and note nearby doors, windows, outlets, and trim.
  • Choose between open shelves, closed cabinets, drawers, or a mix.
  • Match the material to the desired paint, wood grain, wear, and moisture exposure.
  • Confirm how the room will be used before setting shelf and cabinet dimensions.

What Fitted Storage Changes in Your Room

Built-in shelves use wall space that freestanding furniture may leave unused.

Closed cabinets keep everyday items out of sight while drawers keep smaller items easy to reach.

A planned finish helps the storage work with existing doors, trim, flooring, and paint.

Room-specific measurements reduce awkward gaps around walls, corners, and baseboards.

A clear material choice helps you weigh appearance, wear, and care before the quote.

Process

How We Build and Install Fitted Storage

1

Review the room and storage goal

We discuss the room, stored items, preferred access, and the look you want from the finished built-in.

2

Check walls, floors, and trim

We check the opening, floor level, wall depth, baseboards, casing, outlets, and doors before setting the layout.

3

Choose the material and finish

We compare painted MDF, hardwood plywood, solid wood, wood veneer, and laminate shelving against the room's use and finish plan.

4

Set the cabinet and shelf layout

We define cabinet boxes, shelf positions, drawers, fillers, face frames, hardware, and trim details for the agreed design.

5

Build, install, and finish the work

We coordinate construction, placement, paint or surface work, trim details, and final checks for the completed built-in.

How We Approach Custom Storage Decisions

Material fit before finish selection

The surface and core should match the room's use before we discuss color. Painted MDF suits a smooth painted look, while wood veneer or solid wood may fit a visible grain plan. We explain the tradeoffs so the finish does not drive every decision.

Room details shape the build

Outlets, baseboards, casing, floor level, and wall depth all affect the cabinet plan. We include those details when we review the room, because a built-in must meet the existing space as well as hold your items.

When built-ins are the wrong fit

Custom built-ins aren't the right job when you need movable storage, a short-term setup, or no fixed changes to the room. Freestanding furniture may fit those needs better, and we can discuss the difference during planning.

Material Choices for Fitted Storage

This table compares common material choices by surface character and typical role in a built-in.

Overall I enjoyed working with Linda and her team. Even though there were no major redesign of spaces and I knew exactly what tile/fixtures/cabinets etc I wanted I still was appreciative of her insight on certain details and choices. It was very easy to collaborate with her. She makes an effort to be in-tune with a client. She was very responsive and took care of everything that needed attention as soon as she was able too. She made sure that I was listened to and taken care of as a client with her subcontractors. I would work with her again.

Linda and her team did an excellent job! We would highly recommend them. We hired her for a kitchen remodel and asked for a very tight timeline. She delivered and we absolutely love the result. She was very commutative and available to us. Thank you Design and Build NW!

Best remodel experience we have ever had. The oversight, careful workmanship and ownership of the project was above expectations. Our design team was amazing. We also had the same person do all the work start to finish and was a total Pro. Could not recommend enough and will be doing any and all projects through them. This place is a gem.

Questions About Custom Storage Work

To set clear expectations, what materials can be used for custom built-ins before the first stage starts?

Painted MDF works well for a smooth painted finish on custom built-ins. Hardwood plywood supports strong cabinet boxes, solid wood suits visible trim, wood veneer provides real wood grain, and laminate shelving offers a practical finished surface. We compare these materials against room use, wear, moisture, edge details, and the finish you want before preparing the quote.

How do I know whether built-in storage fits my room?

Room layout and storage needs decide whether built-in storage fits the space. We review wall width, floor level, trim, outlets, doors, and the items you need to store. Fixed cabinetry works well when you want a lasting layout around one room. Freestanding furniture may fit better when you need to move or change the storage later.

Which part of the room changes the built-in scope most for Custom Built-Ins?

The wall opening usually sets the main built-in scope. Wall depth, floor level, baseboards, casing, outlets, and door swing then shape the cabinet and trim plan. We check those parts before setting dimensions, because fillers and scribe cuts may be needed for a close fit. Room use also decides whether shelves, drawers, or cabinets make sense.

When should I choose hardwood plywood over solid wood?

Hardwood plywood often suits cabinet boxes, while solid wood often suits visible trim and face frames. The choice depends on the part, the desired grain, the finish, and expected wear. We explain where each material fits in the design, then align the selection with the room's storage needs and overall look.

Why do custom built-in quotes change after room measurements?

Room measurements reveal details that a rough sketch cannot show. Uneven walls, floor level, trim depth, outlets, doors, and required fillers can change the cabinet plan. We use those findings to set a clear scope, material list, finish plan, and installation approach before finalizing the quote.
